Abstract
This study uses textual analysis and theoretical comparison to explore the multidisciplinary model and principles of transformation inherent in Spiritual Exercises that hold the potential to alleviate existential anxiety, suffering, and the loss of meaning experienced by modern individuals. The four-week structure of the Spiritual Exercises—comprising the recognition of sin, the contemplation of Christ’s life, His passion, and resurrection—is designed to guide retreatants through relational engagement with scriptural texts to discern their affective responses and move beyond egocentricity toward the restoration of their relationship with God. To examine the therapeutic dynamics of bibliotherapy discernible within the Spiritual Exercises, this study employs concepts from object relations theory, specifically, projective identification (Melanie Klein) and the transitional object (Donald W. Winnicott), as interpretive frameworks for psychological analysis. By comparing the four stages of the Spiritual Exercises with Campbell’s heroic narrative structure (Departure–Initiation–Return), the study reconstructs the process narratively and interprets it as a journey of existential growth and self-transcendence. Building on these insights, this study formulates a structured model and presents the underlying principles of integrative transformation articulated across three interrelated dimensions: spiritual, psychological, and narrative. This research emphasizes theoretical inquiry, while empirical examination remains a task for future studies
