Abstract

According to Dewey, the practice of democracy and the process of education which aims to promote the growth of the individual are not separated. Democratic community can be achieved only by the public who share goal and interest of community. And the public can be organized only by the autonomous individuals who have the desire for the self-perfection and the sympathy for the sufferings for the others. We can hardly find the circumstances of education to teach the common goods of community which we should share and to promote autonomy of students. It seem to me that this situation is an obstacle to the practice for democracy. Today our education has been degraded into the instruments to realize the private desire for the economical profit rather than to share the goal and goods of the community. In this circumstances, the life and the education are obliged to be separated and a member of community can not be raised as an autonomous individual. So the education came to something to have no connection with democratic practices. In this article, I have regarded the philosopher's--such as Derrida, Habermas and Rorty--attitudes to writings as good examples which have some practical significances for democracy, since they show us what would be the aim of our education. I think it won't be possible for us to do something for democracy if we could not raise our students as an autonomous individual and liberate their imagination for the better world. Writing education is seems to me the best way of democratic practice. I think our aim to educate writing is to be the ‘expansion of self’ which will make student an autonomous individual and have sympathy for the suffering of others.
