Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze how Baby Dinosaur Dooly reveals the cracks in family ideology and middle class consciousness in the 1980s. On the surface, Kim Soo-jung’s cartoon Baby Dinosaur Dooly is a Myung-Rang Comics that has acquired daily life and has the form of humor and Fantasy. However, behind the scenes, it is a socio-cultural text that reveals the familialism and class consciousness of Korean society that changes amid the rapid economic growth and urbanization of the 1980s. The Central Space of the Work, Go Gil-dong's house, is a place where a new family relationship centered on blood ties is tested. Instead, it is a place where a new family relationship called a non-blooded community is tested through comfort and cooperation. Dooley, Douner, and Dooch, who crash-landed in Go Gil-dong's house, are reconstructed into a relationship of mutual care and cooperation through the affective origin of ‘mother's absence’. Through this, this work shows the process of ‘becoming-family’. In addition, They are represented by systems such as families, schools, Non-mainstream Children who have fled without being cared for by the state, and otherized beings. Meanwhile, Mycall is an unknown singer and is a young man engaged in popular culture and art. However, he is represented as an immature adult and a non-capitalist person who cannot exchange labor for money and capital. He also represents beings outside of boundaries. Meanwhile, Go Gil-dong achieves the material abundance and cultural leisure of middle-class men in the city and aims for safety centered on blood-related families. However, with the appearance of Dooley, Douner, and Dooch, his materialistic desires and false consciousness, the subjectivity and small citizenship of vulnerable middle-class male heads are exposed.
