학으로서 윤리학'의 위기

흄이 사실과 가치를 분리한 이래로 ‘학으로서 윤리학’의 정당성과 정체성은 심각하게 위협받아 왔다. 무어가 윤리학의 방법과 원리를 나름대로 체계화하려고 노력하였으나 ‘학으로서 윤리학’에 대한 비트겐슈타인의 의심을 완전히 일소하지는 못한 듯하다. 또한 그의 ‘자연주의의 오류’는 윤리학의 학적 정당성과 정체성을 확고히 만드는 데 도움을 주기 보다는 오히려 더 많은 논쟁을 자극하여 ‘학으로서 윤리학’에 반대하는 진영을 더욱 견고하게 만들었다. 흄과 비트겐슈타인의 영향을 받은 이모티비스트들은 윤리학의 학적 정당성에 대하여 치명적인 공격을 가했다. 도덕성의 존재론적, 인식론적, 실천론적 지위와 속성을 밝히고자 하는 현대 메타윤리학적 논쟁은 실재론과 반실재론, 인지주의와 비인지주의, 내재주의와 외재주의의 이분법적 대립 구도를 벗어나지 못하고 있고, 이러한 이분법적 구도의 딜레마는 ‘학으로서 윤리학’을 부유(浮游)하게 만들고 있다. 덕윤리학을 중심으로 전개되는 현대 규범윤리학적 논쟁 역시 ‘학으로서 윤리학’의 위기에 일조하고 있다. 즉, 덕윤리학의 원리에 대한 거부와 반-이론적 경향은 도덕 이론이나 도덕 원리의 가능성을 부인함으로써 윤리학의 존립 근거를 위협하고 있다. 보편주의를 거부하는 개별주의 역시 윤리학의 정체성을 위태롭게 만들고 있다. 그러므로 현대 메타윤리학과 규범윤리학의 논쟁과는 다른 차원에서 ‘학으로서 윤리학’의 대안을 모색해 볼 필요성이 제기된다.
Abstract
The Crisis of ‘Ethics as a Science’ Since Hume forked 'ought to' from 'is', 'Ethics as a Science' has been severely attacked by many moral philosophers. Despite of G. E. Moore's trial in Principia Ethica, it's crisis is not easily diminished. He, paradoxically, poured oil on the fire of debates about morality. In meta-ethical debates, the ontological status of moral fact and the epistemological ground of it are not likely to be concluded. For the dichotomy between 'natural' and 'non-natural' made a sort of dilemma. Some insist 'natural', others 'non-natural', and their eclectic versions are appeared. Anyone among them is not as strong as defeating others. 'Ethics as a Science' has still not been solid. Contemporary virtue ethics on the other hand increases the danger of 'Ethics as a Science'. It has criticized modern moral philosophy, because that it is not more adequate to factual moral life. Doing so, virtue ethicists advance to moral anti-theorist and moral particularist. They deny the role of principle or theory in moral life, and then suspect ethics itself. But principle, theory and science in moral life is required for ordering or guiding it. In order to give the legitimate place of ethics, we need to change our frame of viewing morality.
