Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to answer the question “Is akrasia(weakness of the will) possible?” by analyzing a debate on the possibility of akrasia in the contemporary ethics. According to R. M. Hare, it is impossible for a person to do one thing if he genuinely and in the fullest sense holds that he ought instead to do something else. In contrast with Hare’s position, D. Davidson tries to vindicate the possibility of akrasia, or weak-willed action as free, intentional action contrary to the agent’s better judgment. The reasons why there is difference between Hare’s position and Davidson’s position are as follows. Davidson regards an agent as incontinent person who makes a certain prima facie judgment, whereas Hare regards an agent as universal prescriptivist. In addition, Davidson states a mild form of internalism, whereas Hare states a extreme version of internalism. Despite these differences, they have some similar opinions. They insist that moral thinking or evaluative judgment(moral judgment) can be divided into two levels. According to them, we can’t experience akrasia in the critical level of moral thinking or unconditional judgment, whereas we can experience moral failures in the intuitive level of moral thinking or conditional judgment(prima facie judgment). Hare takes such moral failures only as quasi-akrasia phenomenon, whereas Davidson takes such moral failures as akrasia. The reasons are as follows. Hare insists that an agent has to make genuine moral judgment to meet the strict conditions of akrasia. In contrast with Hare’s position, Davidson insists that an agent’s all-things considered judgment can meet the conditions of akrasia. Moreover, Davidson understands the theme ‘akrasia’ not only as theoretical problem but also as practical problem, whereas Hare understands the theme ‘akrasia’ as theoretical problem. In this respect, we will be wrestling with the issue ‘akrasia’ as practical problem, although the impossibility of akrasia can be justified in the theoretical and logical field.
