Abstract
This paper is premised on the idea that the African and Caribbean writers of Negritude followed the culture of Europe as much as they promoted their African heritage. Yet, this aspect of the movement is not readily recognized by both the critics and the readers of today. In fact, these black writers’ positions on the culture of the French Empire were far from unanimous; and they were also misrepresented in the recollections made later days, especially when there were no historical records of the movement at its early stage. Focusing on Légitime défense and Tropiques, the two important black Francophone literary magazines from the thirties and forties, this paper examines and analyzes what the adoption of surrealism meant for the Martinican writers and what kind of political possibilities it suggested to them. It also discusses the limitations and contradictions the movement incurred in the process of mobilizing surrealism in its anticolonial endeavors.
