Abstract
This paper examines Kim Su-gil’s nationalist and social movements during the Japanese colonial period. Born into a poor family in Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, he entered Gyeseong School in Daegu, dreaming of studying abroad in the United States. He possessed deep self-reflection and a nationalistic consciousness, and participated in the March 1st Movement. He spearheaded the Daegu and Gimcheon, and led the Merchants’ struggle to close their stores. Furthermore, he spearheaded the formation and activities of the secret anti-Japanese organization ‘Hyeseongdan’. For these activities, he received the heaviest punishment of any individual involved in the Daegu March 1st Movement. In the mid-1920s, he formed a reading group with young people in his hometown, accumulating knowledge and broadening his horizon of awareness. He joined ideological and youth groups and spearheaded the establishment and activities of various social organizations, including the Gimcheon branch of the Singanhoe. Notably, his affable personality and extensive knowledge enabled him to preside over various rallies and lead events. He also engaged in educational activities, playing a significant role in fostering knowledge and culture among local residents. In the late 1920s, he moved to Seoul and worked as a journalist, focusing on in-depth feature articles. He applied the agricultural theories of Marx and Kautsky to Korean agriculture and peasant issues, diagnosing their causes and proposing alternatives. He also criticized Japanese agricultural policies and urged the revitalization of the peasant movement. He also served as an executive member of the Gyeongseong branch of the Singanhoe. Due to his active work, his health deteriorated and he passed away at a young age.
