Abstract
In today's aging society, we have to exam what the meaning of filial piety for adult children toward their parents is and whether it is an deeply personal and ethical problem that cannot be solved by national or welfare policies like other elder issues. Unlike Kant's deontology and Mill's utilitarianism which looked for universal and absolute moral codes, modern philosophers who emphasize special family relationships have five main aspects for filial piety. The first is the debt theory, the second is the gratitude theory, the third is special goods theory, the fourth is the friendship theory, and the fifth is the social role theory. I attempt to reconstruct the concept of filial piety in modern theory by centering Aristotle's filial piety as a friendship(philia). In the book 8 and 9 of Nicomacos Ethics, Aristotle explains the meaning of filial piety in terms of friendship, while also including the debt theory and the gratitude theory. In this case, friendship is a kind of virtue that does not refer to emotion or intimacy, and filial piety as friendship can be a virtue(EN1155a29), which goes beyond simply loving parents or repaying or thanking their parents for sacrificing themselves. Furthermore, the issue of filial piety is not only a matter for children, but also for the noble behavior of parents for children should be considered. As Aristotle argued, the parent-child relationship within the home can extend to the community and the state. Therefore, examining Aristotle's meaning of filial piety as virtue of friendship is a task that can shed light on the meaning and value of the elderly issues.
