기독교 미술의 역사를 통해 ‘최후의 심판’ 도상은 미술가들에 의해 가장 즐겨 다루어진 주제 중 하나였다. 천국과 지옥으로 세계가 구분되고, 구원과 멸망으로 개인들의 운명이 갈리는 이 드라마틱한 장면은 개인의 헌신은 물론, 그 신학적인 의미나 교회의 입지를 다짐에 있어서까지 유용한 도구로 작동했다. 이 도상은 요한계시록이라는 동일한 텍스트를 기반으로 삼으면서도 시대에 따라 새로운 시각으로 조명되면서 이전에는 강조되지 않던 측면이 부각되거나 새로운 시각언어를 탄생시키는 등, 각 시대만의 독특한 문화를 반영해왔다. 이에 본 논문은 ‘최후의 심판’이라는 특정한 도상이 과거의 도상과 확연히 다른 형식으로 드러나는 의미심장한 지점들을 미술의 역사를 통해 추적하고 논의하는 것을 그 목적으로 삼으며 최후의 심판 도상이 시작된 시점. 특정한 틀로 자리잡힌 시기, 이어서 도상에 대한 관심이 사그라지는 과정을 논의한다. 하나의 인습으로 굳어진 ‘최후의 심판’ 도상을 특정 시대나 작가 중심의 연구가 아니라 좀 더 ‘빅 히스토리’ 차원에서 접근함으로써 기독교 미술의 변모 과정을 부분적으로나마 추적하는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다.
Abstract
Throughout the history of art, the Last Judgement remained to be one of the most popular themes dealt by the artists. The scene inspired the artists to depict the image of heaven and hell separating the saved from the condemned. The image not only served the instructive purpose for the believers in affecting salvation, but also functioned as a demonstrative proof to enunciate the spiritual authority of the Church. The Apocalypse of St. John served as the initial textual basis for the iconography, but the meaning grew more complex as new observations and interpretations were made with reference to other available textual sources, both religious and pseudo-religious. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the iconographical changes related to the Last Judgement and to interpret its development. The paper is consisted of two parts. Part I of the paper will cover the iconographical development from early Christian era to Gothic Medieval. Part II will cover from the Renaissance and to the Modern era.
