Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic was a kind of turning point that clearly showed what limitations the growth economy imposes on human life and the cycle of nature. This economy pursued its expansion since the 1990s, widening its scope beyond the national level to the global level. In this ‘era of transformation’, when we want to search for alternative ways of life, the theory of ‘life production’ and ‘commons’ of the German sociologist and ecofeminist Maria Mies (1931∼2023) resonates greatly. Mies has called for a paradigm shift away from ‘commodity production’, which is the core of the growth economy, to ‘life production’ or ‘subsistence production’, and has consistently emphasized that the purpose of production should be life, not money. So how do we move towards ‘life production’ or ‘subsistence production’, which is the complete opposite of ‘commodity production’? In this regard, Mies emphasizes that in order to enable ‘life production’ with the goal of the ‘good life’ or ‘happy life’, the ‘commons’ and the ‘free work’ of local communities are more important than anything else. Therefore, in Mies’s view, what is urgent for us is to reconstruct in today’s context the commons and local communities that have been gradually disappearing due to industrialization based on constant ‘enclosure’ since the 18th century.
