전쟁, 여성, 영화 - 「서부 전선 이상 없다」(1930)에 나타난 여성의 고통과 반전(反戰)의 미학

이 글은 영화 「서부 전선 이상 없다」에 나타난 여성들의 고통 이미지에 대한 심층적인 분석을 통해 이 작품에 담겨진 반전주의적 메시지를 파악하는 데 목표를 두었다. 이 목표를 달성하기 위해 주인공 보이머와 관련된 영화 속에 등장하는 주요 여성들을 세 부류로 각각 구분하여 관찰하였다. 그에 따라, 이 영화는, 첫째, 참전하는 아들과 병든 어머니의 고통을 통해, 둘째, 매춘하는 오빠와 매춘하는 누이의 고통을 통해, 셋째, 전사하는 남편과 절망하는 아내의 고통을 재현함으로써 반전주의적 메시지를 전달하는 데 성공하였다고 높이 평가될 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper has a main intention to illuminate its antiwarism message through focusing on the social sufferings of many women during World War I in the film All Quiet On The Western Front(1930). In order to achieve this important aim, those women should be classified only into three groups who had very close relationship with the main charater Paul Baeumer. According to this analysing classification, this film could be properly evaluated as the best popular antiwar film of the world upon three viewpoints. Firstly, it succeeded in the representation of many suffering mother because their young sons took part in a war. Secondly, it achieved success in representing many hungry sisters who had to walk the street because they had no other means of making money. Thirdly, it attained success through representing hopeless appearance of many pain wives after they took a tragic letter, informing that their husbands should be fallen down at the war. As a result, there is no doubt that this film has to be reappraised as the best antiwar film equally on the feminists’point of view.
