Abstract
This study aims to identify the current patterns of Indian users’ SNS activities, focusing on interactions found on major social media sites, particularly the Facebook pages of Indian businesses. Indian cyber culture has been proliferating during the past decade, with its emphasis shifting from portals towards social media sites. Among these sites, Facebook is one of the most popular sites in India, with 627 businesses currently running their own pages. We selected 12 business pages and sorted them into four categories: Company Brands, Media, Entertainment, and Sport. For each category, we compared and analyzed the types of user interactions (“comment”, “like”, “share”), the types of posts (“status updates”, “videos”, “photos”, “links”, and other), and the rate of interaction for each page. Considering the number of fans, the pages of Company Brands had the largest number among the four categories. This is due to their public visibility and publicity, compared to pages of other categories. Entertainment, Sport, and Media followed in the number of fans. However, while the Company Brand pages have the largest number of fans, they displayed the least number of activities in posting and interactions. On the other hand, Media pages, which have the least number of fans, were most actively engaged with their viewers. This phenomenon reflects the inherent characteristic of Media pages as well as the management strategies of the relevant companies. The comparisons of Brand pages of foreign companies in India (for example, Samsung Mobile India and Nokia India) displayed several similarities, such as the number of fans and posting, as well as the interactions. However, it clearly differed from the Media page of National Geographic Channel India, another foreign company. This indicates that it would be beneficial for Korean companies aspiring localization in India through SNS to adapt the merits of Media pages while creating a strong online presence through their Company Brand pages.
