Abstract
In Bṛhadāraṇyaka-upaniṣad(BṛU) 3.5.1, there are three stages called ‘pāṇḍitya, bālya, mauna’. Some scholars understand this three stages as ‘states of learning, power, meditation’, while others as ‘states of scholar, child, sage’. In this way it is necessary to elucidate whether the word ‘bālya’ is connected with ‘power’ or ‘child’, and to confirm what this three stages mean and intend. In conclusion, three stages mean ‘states of learning, power, meditation’ according to the commentary of Śaṅkara on BṛU, i.e., BṛUBh 3.5.1, and mean ‘states of scholar, child, sage’ according to the commentary of Śaṅkara on Brahmasūtra, i.e., BSBh 3.4.47-50. The result that there is a crucial difference to interpret three stages in BṛUBh and BSBh is caused by the different explanation on the word ‘bālya’. Besides, three stages in both texts of BṛUBh and BSBh are regarded to be the means of knowledge. But three stages are likely to imply ‘knowing Ātman, excluding non-Ātman, synthesizing the both’ in BṛUBh, while to imply ‘knowledge, abstinence, synthesis of the both’ in BSBh. Further, three stages have a strong possibility to correspond with three means of direct knowledge, i.e., ‘hearing, thinking, meditating’(śravaṇa, manana, nididhyāsana) in BṛUBh, while have no connection with hearing etc in BSBh. Three stages of BSBh are merely confined to the subsidiary means to generate the direct knowledge which is dependent of hearing etc.
