Abstract
The Naciketas story of Kaṭha-upaniṣad, a highly organized version of the Naciketas story of Taittirīya-brāhmaṇa, is one of the representative stories in Upaniṣads. With regard to this story, Śaṅkara as a traditional commentator of Upaniṣads shows the way of reading called ‘reading story itself as the background’ by applying literal interpretation or excluding conflicts and dramatic factors from the story. This kind of reading method, taking a profound interest in the knowledge itself rather than the story, is closely bound up with his mental attitude that the story of Upaniṣads is simply the background for the transmission of knowledge. On the other hand, many modern interpreters present the way of reading called ‘reading story itself as an initiation’ by understanding this story as a metaphor for the process of initiation. This kind of reading method is inevitably related to their points of view that the story itself is an independent factor and holds an independent import in Upaniṣads. In addition to these reading methods, there is yet another way of reading called ‘reading story itself as the process of meditation’ in which the story is regarded as an inner journey in one’s consciousness. As traditional interpreters like Śaṅkara had a complete disregard for the story itself, so it is not necessary to regard his reading method as the standard and authoritative one. However, it is also not necessary to look too negatively on the attitude of despising the story itself, because Indian tradition lays stress on the contents of transmission. Reading method of modern interpreters is fully acceptable if we consider the origin of Naciketas story as well as the pedagogical method in those days. After all, as it is possible for us to read the story of Upaniṣads in various ways, the most important thing is the attitude of respecting each reading method in its own right. Various ways of reading the story of Upaniṣads will positively contribute to the continuance of that story as a living tradition and to making our understanding of Upaniṣadic tradition far richer.
