Abstract

The Bhāgavad Gītā is the wellknown and discussed religious text from India. It has been regarded as the most important scripture in Indian literature. By the way it contains a conversation between Arjuna, the warrior with a virtuous sin fearing mind, and Kṛṣṇa, his friend, philosopher and guide. As depicted in the epic plot of the Mahābhārata by the world poet Vyāsa, it was a mere affair between certain individuals, but a conflict between the eternal rivals - justice and injustice, self-respect and arrogance, good and evil, truth and false, self-defence and aggression. Gitā presents the path of Niṣkāma karma yoga. The ideal of the gītā is not negativism, asceticism or escapism. It is not Naiṣkarmya, but Niṣkāma Karma. This is the central teaching of the Gītā. God-realization is not possible without self-surrender. The man becomes merely an instrument of the divine power. He does not work for God, but as his instrument. In the Gītā the Sthita-prajña works for the good of the living, but ultimately it becomes spontaneous and natural for him. The Gītā contains several such words which are used in different senses and the exact meaning has to be certified from their context. They are Buddhi, Jñāna, Bhakti, Yoga, Yajña and Ātman(intellect, knowledge, devotion, meditation, sacrifice and Self). Bhakti is defined as disinterested service to God. It is a form of Karma. Disinterested action is not possible without knowledge. Self-perfection is the goal in life. Yoga is the means to it. Karma yoga, bhakti yoga and jñāna yoga get their due place in the Bhāgavad Gītā. The Gītā is perfectly balanced in its outlook. Vivekananda said, “Those who work without any consciousness of their lower ego are not affected with evil, for they work for the good of the world. To work without motive, to work unattached, brings the highest bliss and freedom. This secret of Karma Yoga is taught by the Lord Śri Krishna in the Gītā”. If you follow the teachings of the Bhagavad Gītā in a logical and mathematical manner, you will achieve salvation, since the Gītā contains the unwritten laws of the universe. In this way, the Gītā is the perfect guide to those who aspire to build a perfect personality.
