Abstract

Yoga can be divided into two in large: 1) Haṭhayoga in terms of a method, 2) Rājayoga in terms of a goal. According to 'Bhagavadgītā,' one of the major literatures of Rājayoga, Yoga has three branches: 1) 'Jñānayoga' (yoga of wisdom), 2) 'karmayoga' (yoga of action), and 3) 'bhaktiyoga' (yoga of devotion). Although each of three has its own characteristics, it is known that the effects are the same. Based on the context of Bhagavadgītā, however, 'bhaktiyoga' (yoga of devotion), which devotes to Kṛṣṇa, the Absolute of Hinduism, is the highest yoga, and the other two are the parts of bhaktiyoga. This is clear through the cosmology in Bhagavadgītā, defining that the ultimate reality of the universe is Kṛṣṇa. Yoga means not only the process of the combination with the ultimate reality, but also the combination itself with the ultimate reality. Moreover, this combination process is the converse process of the development of the nature. 'Jñānayoga' (yoga of wisdom) and 'karmayoga' (yoga of action) is the process in order to reach Brahma, which corresponds to the nature among the converse process of the development of the nature. 'Bhaktiyoga' (yoga of devotion), on the other hand, is the base of Brahma. In other words, 'Bhagavadgītā' is the process of the combination with Kṛṣṇa, the ultimate reality of the universe, freed from the control of three guṇas.
