Abstract

According to the annotation of Śaṁkara, karma yoga is a means of jñāna yoga. One who is appropriate for karma(deeds) is ajña(without knowledge). Ajña – anātmajñya(one who is unaware of ātman) should practice karma yoga until s/he gets ātmajñānaniṣṭhāyogyatā(qualification for the achievement of knowledge of ātman). There is, however, no karaṇīya(what one ought to do) ātmavid(one who is aware of ātman). Karma(deeds) is dharma and adharma. All beings follow the prakṛti(personality) appeared on the beginning of saṁskāra - the subconscious formed as the result of karma, such as dharma and adharma practiced in one´s previous existence. Avabodha(perception) of ātman(the self) is jñāna(knowledge); and vijñāna(consciousness) is the special experience of it. We should defeat the enemy in the form of desire through reaching samadhi(the ultimate state of meditation) with purified mind. According to the annotation of Rāmanuja, jñānaniṣṭhā(being devoted to knowledge) is the stopped state of the functions of all sensory organs. Karma(deeds) is the opposite of the devotion to knowledge. People of knowledge disturbed by the object have the authority to karma yoga. Without the practice of karma(deeds) stated on scriptures(sacred books), the knowledge stem from the stoppage of the functions of all sensory organs is not achieved. Through the fulfillment of karma yoga, one’s past sin is exterminated, virtues(saguṇa) are seized, and then finally jñāna yoga is fulfilled by nirmalāntaḥkaraṇa(immaculate internal organs). One who practice karma yoga without obsession is better than jñānaniṣṭha(one who devotes him/herself to jñāna), since there is no possibility of negligence. Akarma(absence of karma) is jñānaniṣṭhā(full devotion to jñāna). Devotion to karma(deeds) is better than devotion to jñāna(knowledge). Close examination of the quality of ātman(the self) as one who do not practice karma is connected to the practice of karma(deeds), through ātmayāthātmyajñāna(jñāna of the nature of ātman). Since ātmajñāna(jñāna of ātman) is contained within karma yoga, jñāna yoga is better. Through the fulfillment of karma yoga, ātman – the sublime is achieved. We must rid ourselves of desire - the tricky enemy which entrenches manas(the mind) as ātman(the self) in karma yoga through buddhi(intellect) as ātman(the self) by knowing the predominance of desire over jñāna(knowledge).
