Abstract
This article is aimed at throwing a light on the structural characteristics of the Aṣṭādhyāyī by analysing the organization and function of sūtras. Pāṇini introduces technical devices to put rules in about 4,000 sūtras. Grammatical terms and forms are expressed in terms of abbreviations which consist of indicatory letters called it. And sūtras don not only present grammatical rules, but also function in various ways in relation to the whole structure of grammar. Sūtras are placed in domains and interior domains by heading rules(adhikārasūtras). And they within a domain are arranged with regard to the principle of anuvṛtti ‘recurrence’ and paratva ‘subsequent in order’ for its proper interpretation and application. Specially, a higher level rule are deeply related to the structure and organization of the Aṣṭādhyāyī. Among others, sūtra 1.4.2 resolves conflicts in the assignment of terms within the given domain by providing the principle of paratva. Sūtra 3.1.94 allows an exception to block its general counterpart only optionally. Sūtra 6.4.22 provides for a general rule to apply under the provision of asiddhatva ‘suspension of rules’. And sūtra 8.2.1 provides for derivational process to proceed under the provision of asiddhatva, ‘suspension of rules’ contained within the last three quarters of the Aṣṭādhyāyī. In relation to those principles and provisions, sūtras are organized and arranged in order. Regarding the order of arrangement, a general rule comes first and an obligatory (nitya) rule and an internally-conditioned(antaraṅga) rule follow and an exception(apavāda) appears finally. This ordering is prepared according to the general recognition that a subsequent rule is treated more powerful than a prior rule under the principle of paratva. However, the three rules except a general rule do not observe the principle of paratva. These principles and exceptions help the rules to produce correct word and sentence forms, while avoiding possible conflicts between rules in the derivational history. In conclusion, the structure of Aṣṭādhyāyī is organized to provide for the limited number of rules to derive and explain the complicated usage of the Sanskrit language in a correct and metatheoretical way.
