정기룡 장군의 군사사상 연구 : 임진왜란 당시 그가 참전한 주요전투 승리요인 분석을 중심으로

Abstract

There are some earlier studies about the life and historical activities of General Jung Ki-ryong, who played a significant role during Japanese invasion of Korea, but no prior study regarding his military ideology has been conducted. Thus, this study aims to deduce the general’s military ideology by analyzing his major battles recorded in his biography ‘Maeheounshilgi(梅軒實記)’. The definition of military ideology is ‘conceptual thought process on how to prepare and carry out a war with what war will and belief based on the right perception of present and future wars to accomplish the national goal.’ Military ideology consists of the will and conviction in conducting a war, the construction of military force, and the operation of military force. Since historical records of the general including ‘Maeheounshilgi(梅軒實記)’ are mainly comprised of his wartime accomplishments and how he carried out combats, inferring the construction of military force is limited. Thus, this study analyzes the general’s military ideology by focusing on the operation of military force and the will and conviction in conducting a war. According to the study, military ideologies of General Jung Ki-ryong are as follows. With regard to the operation of military force, the general carried out ① Fast execution, ② Manned ambush, ③ Surprise attacks and guerrilla operations after thoroughly examining battlefields and strengths and weaknesses of both forces. With regard to the will and conviction in conducting a war, at every war he practiced ① True courage, ② Devotion to accomplish goals, ③ Patriotism, respect and consideration, ④ Creativity. The contemporaries of the rapidly changing present and future should establish and practice survival strategies in order to resolve crises confronting them. General Jung Ki-ryong’s military ideologies presented in this study would provide guidance to lay foundations of such strategies. In future research, it is vital to discover more historical records of General Jung Ki-ryong and to examine combat situations at the time considerably, and quantified and clearly defined analysis tools should be developed and applied in order to deduce his military ideologies.
