Abstract

This study analyzes Tata’s Investment in South Africa, as an example of a successful South-South cooperation. Firms from emerging market have, usually, weak Ownership Advantages compared to firms from Advanced Economies. However, Tata could increase its Ownership Advantages by reducing Uncertainty, a root of Transaction costs, which results from a long-standing relationship between India and Africa. In addition, Tata’s strategy of entering Africa market through Tata Africa Holdings increases cooperation among affiliates, internalizing transaction costs. Internalization of transaction costs develops Tata’s Ownership AdvantageA firm should adjust itself to local institutional environment to overcome the liability of foreignness. Firms from Advanced Economies may have a hard time of running their businesses in emerging markets because of a long institutional distance between Advanced Economy and Emerging Market. Tata accumulated its experience of running a business under the immature institutional environment of India. This experience becomes an important asset for entering South Africa which has also immature institutional environment.
