Abstract
This articles is an attempt of a yoga philosophical understanding the pañca kośa which was presented in the Taittirīya Upaniṣad, Paiṅgala Upaniṣad, and Pañcadaśī as Advaita Vedānta literature. Taittirīya Upaniṣad is very important. For in the course of explaining, the pañca-kośa is first appeared for 'yoga' term. ‘Pañca kośa’ is a theory about body/sheath consisting of the essence of food(anna-rasa-maya-kośa), consisting of life(prāṇa-maya-kośa), consisting of a sensuous mind(mano-maya-kośa, consisting of understanding (vijñāna-maya-kośa or buddhi-maya-kośa), and consists of bliss (ānanda-maya-kośa). First, the body/sheath consisting of essence of food is a cause of the other four sheaths. For it was made up of five gross elements(pañca-sthūla-bhūtas) such as an earth, water, fire, wind, ether. Second, the sheath consists of life/vital principle made of five vital airs(prāṇa, āpāna, udāna, vyāna, samāna) and five action organs(pañca karendriya: vāk, pāṇi, pāda, pāyu, upasthā). Third, the sheath consisting of sensuous mind is made of sensuous mind and five sensory perception organs(pañca budhīndriyas: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body). Fourth, the sheath consisting of intelligence was also made of five sensory perception organs such as the intelligence and mind as consisting of sensuous mind. These three sheaths of life, sensuous mind, and intelligence form the subtle body(liṅga śārīra, sūkṣma śārīra). Fifth, the sheath consists of bliss is the knowledge of one's own form. That is also the causal body((kāraņa-śarīra). Though this pañca kośa can mainly find in the Advaita Vedānta literature, it is treated seriously in the field of yoga therapy and yoga psychology. Thus, to understand the yoga philosophy is thought to be significant.
