Abstract
The origin of Pañcakośa theory comes supposedly from five things of ‘what is made of food (annamaya)’, etc. appeared in TaUp. Although the name of ‘Pañcakośa’ is not found in chapters 2 and 3 of TaUp, it is beyond doubt that these five things become the basis of the theory of Pañcakośa of later period. And ‘what is made of food’, etc. are presented as five structural elements of human beings. Further, these are presented as the means of meditation for attaining the knowledge of Brahman. This point is backed by the direct words of chapter 2 of TaUp, the topic of chapters 2 and 3 of TaUp, and the suffix ‘maya’. This meditation as upāsana is grounded on the equivalence between microcosm and macrocosm, and selects ‘macrocosmic Brahman interiorized in microcosm as Ātman’ as its object. In other words, this meditation is a method to attain the knowledge of macrocosmic Brahman, by contemplating key elements of microcosm, i.e., ‘what is made of food’, etc. as macrocosmic Brahman. In this case, upāsana grounded on the equivalence is possible, as ‘what is made of food’, etc. have the attributes of creation, maintenance, and destruction just like Brahman. These five structural elements of human beings are called ‘Pañcakośa’ by Śaṅkara long ago. And in the circle of Advaita Vedānta, the five kośas are accepted as a practical method and developed elaborately as a theory. In short, five things of Upaniṣads employed to meditate on Brahman are re-employed in Advaita Vedānta to discriminate Brahman from non-Brahman. Even though five things are products of ignorance and are known to conceal Ātman, because of that, they could be utilized as an effective method to attain the discriminative knowledge. Today Yoga retains this very theory of Pañcakośa completed by Advaita Vedānta without any apparent change. However, to regard ‘kośa made of bliss (ānandamaya-kośa)’ as a state of samādhi or of Ātman not only matters little to Advaita Vedānta but also goes against its fundamental meaning.
