Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify that yoga is a healing system as well as practicing and also to define that yoga is absolute and holistic healing to cure physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions in a comprehensive way. In particular, this paper presents theoretical grounds for holistic healing mechanism by understanding and healing humans from holistic viewpoints by pañcakośavāda of yoga. First of all, the paper looks at pañcakośavāda, which embodies continuous multi-layer structures in the body and then the link between pañcakośavāda, rough body(sthūlāśarīra), delicate body(sūkṣmāśarīra) and causal body(kāraṇaśarīra). And then, the paper deals with holistic-healing elements, related to practicing system of the eight limbs of yoga based on pañcakośavāda. Pañcakośavāda, with ātman at the center, consists of layers including ānanda, vijñāna, manas, prāṇa and anna from within, where ignorance leads to ātman taking form as jīvātman, making five layers of energy dimensions realized by jīvātman. That is, pañcakośavāda is aimed for one to realize multi-dimensions of false self-identification, a cause of anguish and samsara in a detailed way. Linking three-layer body of Vedānta with Pañcakośavāda, the rough body indicates a layer made of anna, delicate body layers of prāṇa, manas and vijñāna and causal body a lay of ānanda. Likewise, the three-layer body and Pañcakośavāda are linked in a causal and organic fashion. According to yoga-sutra, practicing is a purifying process from rough elements to delicate ones. Among them, the eight limbs of yoga is practicing covering the body, spirit and mind and a holistic healing system as well, which divides into antaraṅga and bahiraṅga by its function in and out of mind. Examining the eight limbs of yoga based on Pañcakośavāda, āsana, the third element, is correlated with a layer of anna, prāṇāyāma with a layer of prāṇa, dhāraṇā, dhyāna and samādhi with layers of manas, vijñāna, and ānanda in a purifying and healing way. As practicing is purifying each body to become delicate, the rough body is vested into the delicate body, which is vested into the causal body. Like this, a process where the body is purified to turn delicate is a process of healing. Therefore, yoga brings out spiritual evolvement through practices and purifies the dark body into the pure body through healing. Yoga ends up to be the path leading to absolute healing through practices.
