Abstract

This article is aimed to clarify what semantic implications arguments of the Dative case in Hindi have and how the implications are represented syntactically. It attempts to analyse the characteristics of the Hindi Dative by referring to the rules and comments on the Sanskrit Dative case presented in the tradition of Pāṇini grammar. In Pāṇini grammar, the Dative is defined as the goal that an agent intends to approach through an object. In Hindi, the goal is seen in three categories: beneficiary, sharer, and the goal of verb action. If the object to be given is a physical thing, such as an object or a gift, the Dative argument, as an recipient, appears with the Dative postposition ko. On the other hand, if the object to be given is an abstract such as emotion or celebration, the Dative argument is not in a position to receive it but in a position to share it with the agent, and appears with the Instrumental postposition se. And when a particular action becomes the goal of verb action, it or its object appears with the postposition ko or the compound postposition ke lie ‘for’. On the other hand, the subject of the Dative Subject Construction(DSC) can be interpreted in terms of the concept of locus. The objects of experience such as emotion and psychology are considered to arise within an experiencer rather than to be given by the others. Thus the Dative subject is a place where emotion and psychology exist. Even in the DSCs that express possession, acquisition, duty, need, etc., the objects of possession etc. can be said not to be things given by the others but to be things being or becoming to be within the arguments of the Dative subject. And in the Conceptual Structure suggested by Jackendoff(1990), which may present meanings such as possession, acquisition, necessity, etc. conceptually, the Dative subject appears as a locus. In conclusion, the Hindi Dative has the implication of locus as well as goal. It can be said that the primary implication of the Dative was the goal as a beneficiary, but as the meaning expands, it became to include the concept of sharer and locus.
