Abstract
The functional-typological approach investigates into how a language morphologically reflects the cognitive structure and how languages are classified into different types in accordance with their structures by using cross-linguistic function or implicational universals put forward by Greenberg. This is a principle of the relationship that x implies y if a language holds a linguistic element x, then the semantic feature y occurs. Implicational universals describe a dependence between logically-typological parameters with a particular feature that is always accompanied by another feature. An ergative case marker has a function of volitionality that may be valid across languages on the basis of universal semantic parameters. Semantic analyses take an essentially-universal position to make reference to universally-valid semantic properties, such as volitionality of the agent if a subject comes with an ergative case marker. To what extent, do the universals apply for Hindi? This paper uses data from Hindi to cast light on implicational universals on the ergative case in terms of volitionality. Typological work on the ergativity is also focused by comparing the semantics of passive from Sanskrit. With a list of sentences across the ergative-absolutive languages, this study compares ergative with dative in terms of case markers and illuminates diachronic typological patterns in some ways, which mean there is a considerable research on the single syntactic parameter. The conclusion illustrates some implicational universals proposed by Greenberg for the practice of research on language structure and meaning to distinguish volitional from non-volitional agents in terms of the structure case. In other words, Hindi can be held up as evidence for implicational universals, in the form of ‘the semantic feature of volitionality is the innate property of ergative case.’
