Abstract
The study of case morphology system enables us to interpret the correlation between case and verbal agreement in Hindi. With respect to ergativity, Hindi shows verbal agreement patterns that a noun phrase which is in nominative case label the occurrence of verbal agreement while a noun phrase which is in other case cannot. In this paper, I discuss how nominative case trigger agreement in different types of sentences. Broadly speaking, one major approach has been implemented up to now to explain verbal agreement system. It is based on the lexical case marking that any NPs which are lexically case marked cannot license verbal agreement. However, this approach does not provide how accusative case cannot trigger agreement in Hindi. In the analysis of verbal agreement pattern in Hindi, the essential component to my claim is complied with a statement “Verb agrees with a noun phrase which is only in nominative case”. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to illustrate how absolutive case is considered as nominative case, and to interpret the correlation between nominal case marking and verbal agreement in Hindi.
