Abstract
This paper analyzes how India-U.S. relations have been shaped, developed, and settled under the Modi government from 2014 to 2024. In a review of bilateral relations, we conducted a analysis by categories mainly in the fields of defense and economic relations. Additionally, we reviewed the India-U.S. space and energy sectors as part of the improvement of bilateral relations. We also considered degrading factors for these relations, including the Russia-Ukraine War, issues concerning Iran and Pakistan, and trade conflicts. After careful examination, we reached three conclusions. First, India-U.S. relations have made historical improvements in all domains in terms of building communication channels, sharing a wide range of information, and resolving decade-old trade issues. However, the two countries still maintain separate diplomatic and economic stances when their national interests conflict. Emerging issues include divergent positions on internaitonal conflicts, regional issues, intellectual property, and the digital economy. While these disagreements keep the two countries from reaching full compromise, India-U.S. relations are clearly developing toward a convergence of interests, forging a strategic space for each other by connecting with one another.
