Abstract
In this article, we focus on the first half of the 20th century and examine the situation of the geomungo in terms of the development of instrumentation and the characteristics of the melodies. First of all, we can see that in the first half of the 20th century, Julpungryu performances were characterized by two, three, or four instruments. This is different from today's five-or-more-instrument ensembles, such as geomungo, yanggeum, gayageum, daegeum, piri, haegeum, and janggu, which sometimes do not include a geomungo. Another peculiarity is that yanggeum was the most frequent instrument in the performance of julpungryu at that time, while haegeum was very rarely included, and piri did not appear at all. The current tradition of performing in ensembles of geomungo, gayageum, yanggeum, haegeum, danso, daegeum, sepiri, and janggu, as well as other instruments, began to emerge in the 1930s, when members of the Yiwangjik musicians tried it out at the Yiseuphoe. In the melodic progression of Score of Yiwangjik Aakbu, the first half of the 20th century, as seen through <GaemyunDodri>, the stringed instruments of gayageum, geomungo, and yanggeum each had a melodic progression similar to that of the wind instruments. Another characteristic is that the melody of the Yanggeum was often similar to the melody of the wind instruments. In this regard, it is possible that wind instrumentalists at the time were also playing the yanggeum, and played the yanggeum melody similarly to the wind instrument melody. As such, the arrangement of the julpungryu in the first half of the 20th century varied depending on the performance situation and the musicality of the performers, and these circumstances seem to have influenced the melodies of the julpungryu arrangements of the time.
