Abstract

This article examines the background of the publication and compilation of scores associated with the Yiwangjik aakpu (李王職雅樂部), a major contributor to court music in the first half of the 20th century. Specifically, this article focuses on the documents related to the publication and compilation of musical scores within Chosŏn aak (朝鮮雅樂) in Changsŏgak (藏書閣). From the early 20th century, classical music (chamber music) among people has expanded beyond the specialized space of the Yiwangjik aakpu. In this process, attempts to transcribe musical scores were first made by private music organizations, and it was evident that some members of the Yiwangjik aakpu, who had been involved as professional musicians with private organizations, were also engaged. In other words, the background of the music collection and compilation project that were later promoted by the Yiwangjik Music Department is preceded by the collection of classical music (chamber music). This also indicates that the music score of the Yiwangjik aakpu was facilitated through interactions between its musicians and civilian musicians. Although the Annals were extracted and copied during the period of Yiwangjik aakpu, the scores from the Annals of King Sejong (世宗實錄) and the Annals of King Sejo (世祖實錄) were repeatedly published in 1922 and 1942. Further in-depth analysis is necessary to understand the purpose and the subjects of the publication. Additionally, it is crucial to actively evaluate the aspirations and accomplishments of aak research within Aakpu. The transcription of Yiwangjik aakpu was initially organized as the form of traditional chŏngganbo, sporadically used for educational purposes. It can be observed that traditional music was gradually standardized and uniformized as it was repeatedly documented in Western staff notation.
