Abstract
This study's goal is to provide implications for current Korean elementary school music education by thoroughly analyzing brain science studies on music. For our research method, we reviewed books about brain science on music and previous research results of previous papers. The content of the research can be roughly split into two categories. First, we integrated brain regions that involve the perception and recognition of musical elements and emotional elements of music. Second, we looked at brain science studies that compared music and language toward the aspect of evolution and development. Music perception and cognition are involved not only in the right hemisphere but also in all parts of the brain. Also, music education, including practicing instruments and listening, leads to an alteration of neuroplasticity. The change in neuroplasticity shows a positive effect on learning capability of the other subjects as well as the development of musical ability. Additionally, we suggest that it is essential to stimulate auditory senses from an early age and strengthen music education in elementary school through public education, considering the crucial period for learning in music education according to the period of brain development.
