Abstract

The Phonetic Notating System of Chinese Initials of The Korean Annotation of Newly-translated Laoqida(老乞大新釋諺解)[abbr: KANL]KANL is a textbook on Chinese which was published through modifying Laoqida(老乞大) by Byeon Heon(邊憲) and the rest in 1763. It shows us the system of Chinese Initials in the 18th century. We'll study the phonetic notating system of Chinese Initials through KANL of Columbia University's collection in this article. KANL has Laoqida(老乞大) classic print in it, so we will also make a comparison three Initial systems among Laoqida(老乞大) classic print, KANL and Modern Chinese, and have the following conclusions:(1)There are all 16 letters used for notating Chinese Initials in KANL, but it cannot be said that those 16 letters represent the correct Chinese Initial system of those times. Unlike The Korean Annotation of Hongwuzhengyun(洪武正韻譯訓), the right sound-notating system of KANL tell us that a letter corresponds to two or more Initials. The correspondence of right sound-notating system of KANL with the Modern Chinses Initials
