Abstract

A Study on DunHuang Frontier Lyrics Kim, Hyun-ju DunHuang frontier lyrics are private songs among the melody lyrics(曲子詞) recorded in the DunHuang documents, which sing the wars, landscapes and customs at the frontier, and the resentment of women who let their husbands go to the war. They are the popular songs in DunHuang area and the private frontier lyrics which may represent Tang(唐) dynasty. Lyrics are naturally related with music ; they were combined with the music of the barbarian (who lived north of the Tumen river) which had been handed down from the west margin and minor ethnic groups and traditional Chinese music and created a lot of new music. Therefore, long and short popular lyrics were produced. DunHung frontier lyrics are the long and short lyrics which are able to sing and songs which were sung by the military men or residents in the remote regions. Only a few scholars who study lyrics of Tang, Five dynasties and Song dynasty have been interested in the frontier lyrics and even the researchers of Dunhuang literature have hardly noticed them. This study is to formulate the meaning of frontier lyrics by examining and analyzing the geographical and social characters of DunHuang and the DunHuang frontier lyrics in Tang dynasty as a first step. In addition, it also evaluates the significance in the early popular lyrics and the influence over the frontier literature.
