China in Pursuit of FTA and Its Foreign Strategic Implications

The aim of this study is to analyze Chinese strategy in pursuit of FTA and to draw implications on its foreign strategy. For this purpose, various international political discussions on FTA were reviewed, from which effects of independence, asymmetric interdependence, and security externalities on FTA were drawn and applied thereafter. By doing so, the conclusion was drawn as follows; China is in pursuit of FTA taking into account the economic, foreign, and security motives at the same time. Those motivation found in the target countries China aims to sign FTA with in a complicated way. Such strategic motivation works at Chinese advantage in establishing a stable and cooperative economic security environment through the effect of interdependence. The effect of asymmetric interdependence enables China, which possesses the economic comparative advantage, to expand its influence and louder more voice vis-à-vis the contracting parties. In addition, by the effect of security externalities, there will be more opportunities for China to hold any external influence in check. What it implies is that FTA could be a means for China to secure an opportunity to build a China-centric system in favor of her.
