Abstract
This paper examines the three-pattern accentsystem of the western Gyeongsang-do based on Japanese Accentology. Theobjective of this paper is to describe the accent systems and their mechanismsof a three-pattern accent system. I will discuss on the pattern accent systemin this paper found in this areas、and reporton data obtained during field work there. An N-pattern accent system, only N oppositionsexist irrespective of the length of the accentual units (number of moras orsyllables), accentual opposition do not increase more than a limited numberdesignated by each system. ‘N’ is one, two, or three, depending on the dialect. The three-pattern accent system proposed in thispaper in which only three oppositions exist irrespective of the length of theaccentual units、can be found in Sangju-si、Gumi-si、Gimcheon-si、Geochang-gun and Hamyang-gun、with the Sobeck mountain range at the center. Inthis paper、Iwill discuss phenomena、such as the accents of compound words、which have not yet considered.
