理由・原因の条件表現形式についての通時的考察 ―「ほどに」と「から」を中心として―
A Diachronic Study on the Forms of Japanese Conditional Expressions for Reason and Cause - Focused on “hodoni(ほどに)” and “kara(から)” -

Languages change over time. This paper focuses on the forms of expression which consist of conditional phrases for reason and cause, especially on the diachronic change of “hodoni” and “kara.” The analysis is based on Shoukaisingo, an educational text that has been developed in the seventeenth century in Korea to learn Japanese language. This paper studies the rise and falls of a conditional expression, “hodoni” using the first, second and the final editions of Shoukaisingo, and analyzes the usage of “hodoni” and the evolvement of “kara” of the time. Finally, this paper considers the usage of “kara” in Meiji Era. With these analyses, this paper confirms that both “hodo ni” and “kara” have been used to state a causal relationship, while “hodoni” has been disappeared since then despite the fact that “kara” has remained persistent over time. These diachronic changes can be interpreted as that the usage of “kara” in sentence-ending particles has been widely spread, in a way to convey the speaker’s intention to the audience. In this context, in Japanese as a second language, it is recommended to distinguish the usages of “kara” in conjunctive particles and sentence-ending particles.
