Abstract
A Study on Expressing Redundant Negative Structures in Mandarin Chinese Kim, Jong-ho This study attempts to look into the 'redundant negative structures' in Mandarin Chinese in terms of pragmatics.Redundant Negatives 'bu(不)' and 'mei(沒)' are created to emphasis the speaker's intention. First, I classify the redundant negative structures into 'haobu + VP(好不 + VP)' structure and 'chadinr mei + VP(差點兒沒 + VP)' structure. 'Hao bu + VP(好不 + VP)' structure consists of VP denoting the speaker's [-moral rule], and 'chadinr mei + VP(差點兒沒 + VP)' structure consists of VP denoting the speaker's [-psychological expectation].I suggest that those structures are 'adverbs(hao / chadinr) + ('bu/mei) + VP [-moral rule] / [-psychological expectation]' structure model.
