Abstract

Du-Mu(杜牧) is a poet who was active in the late Tang Dynasty, it represented the poetry circle of the late Tang Dynasty with Li-Shangyin(李商隱). There are quite a lot of studies on his poetry, but there is very little data on the relationship between Buddhism and his poetry. First, I will select the poetries related to Buddhist culture in his poetry. Then, I want to study three parts of Du-Mu(杜牧) and Buddhist culture, the acceptance of the Buddhist culture and the psychological expression through Buddhist culture. The first is the Du-Mu(杜牧) and Buddhist culture. Although he had political views of anti-Buddhism, but the creation of poetry related to Buddhist culture continues from the young to the old times. The second is the acceptance of Buddhist culture. Although he was not attracted by Buddhism, he created a lot of poetry related to Buddhist culture. In his poetry, the poetry in which Buddhist culture is expressed is 65 poems. The third is the psychological expression through Buddhist culture. His poetry expressing the Buddhist culture is represented by the outflow of sentimental psychology and the pursuit of psychological peace. To summarize, he is not a poet who is attracted by Buddhism but a poet influenced by Buddhist culture. He is a poet who uses Buddhist culture in terms of expressing sentimental psychology or pursuing psychological peace.
