뉴노멀 시대, '디지털 사본학'의 의미와 연구방법론 - 돈황 디지털 자료를 중심으로-

한국에서 디지털 인문학에 대한 담론은 2000년대 초반부터 본격적으로 시작되었다. 인문학의 위기와 그것의 돌파구 중 하나로서 디지털 인문학에 대해 논의를 전개한 이후, 학술 단체에서는 대규모 프로젝트를 통해 일련의 인문학 데이터베이스를 구축하고, 연구자들은 각자의 영역에서 디지털 인문학을 학문에 적용하였다. 향후 디지털 인문학에 대한 담론은 소규모 팀이나 개인의 차원에서 디지털 자료를 생산하고 데이터베이스를 구축할 수 있는 단계로 발전할 가능성이 크다. 본 논문은 디지털 인문학의 한 분야로서 디지털 사본학을 제안한다. 서구의 전통적 사본학이 자료 그 자체의 외형과 물질적 부분 중심으로 연구가 진행되는 반면, 최근 부상하고 있는 중국 사본학은 사본의 내용과 의미에 더욱 중점을 두고 있다. 중국의 서화사범대학 사본학연구소는 돈황 디지털 자료를 주요 대상으로 하여 전통적 사본학과 최근 중국의 사본학을 접목시키고 있다. 코로나19가 가져온 뉴노멀의 시대에 돈황 디지털 자료는 사본학의 연구대상이 되기에 충분하다. 영국 IDP에서 제공하는 돈황 사본 이미지는 전문적 연구에 활용할 수 있을 만큼 품질이 우수하다. 특히 프랑스국립도서관 갈리카 디지털도서관의 돈황 사본 이미지는 IDP보다 더 해상도가 높은 자료를 제공하여 세밀한 연구에 유용하다. 그리고 중국국가도서관 역시 꾸준하게 돈황 디지털 이미지를 제작하여 IDP를 통해 서비스하고 있다. 본 논문은 먼저 한국에서의 디지털 인문학 담론과 디지털 사본학의 의미에 대해 소개한 후, 돈황 사본을 주요 대상으로 하여 디지털 사본학의 연구방법론과 향후 방향에 대해 논의한다.
Abstract
The discourse on digital humanities in Korea began in the early 2000s. After discussing the crisis of humanities, and digital humanities as a breakthrough, academic organizations have built basic humanities databases through large-scale projects, and researchers have applied digital humanities to their respective fields. In the future, the discourse on digital humanities is likely to develop into a stage where small groups or individuals can produce digital materials and build databases. This paper proposes digital manuscript studies as a field of digital humanities. While Western traditional manuscript studies mainly research the appearance and the material aspects of the manuscript itself, recent Chinese manuscript studies are more focused on their content and meaning. The Institute of Manuscript Studies of Xihua Normal University, China combines traditional manuscript studies and recent Chinese manuscript studies with Dunhuang digital manuscripts as the main research materials. In the era of the “new normal” brought by the COVID-19 outbreak, Dunhuang digital materials are sufficient to become the subject of manuscript studies. The numerous images of Dunhuang manuscripts provided by the International Dunhuang Project (IDP) at the British Library are of good quality to be used in research. In particular, those provided by Gallica at the National Library of France have higher resolution than the IDP, which is useful for detailed research. In addition, the National Library of China consistently produces digital images of Dunhuang and provides them through the IDP. This paper first introduces the discourse of digital humanities and the meaning of digital manuscript studies and then discusses the research methodology and future direction of digital manuscript studies with the Dunhuang digital materials as the main subject.
