초록

이 연구는 구어 담화에 관한 개략적이고 포괄적인 연구로 구어 담화 연구의 동향을 기능주의적 언어 연구의 관점에서 개략적으로 살펴보고, 이러한 구어 담화 연구가 어떻게 활용되고 있는지를 구어 말뭉치 구축과 자연언어 처리의 연구를 중심으로 개괄하였다. 구어 담화에 관한 연구는 언어가 소리와 뜻으로 이루어진 기호라는 언어형식의 측면보다는 의사소통의 수단이라는 언어의 기능에 초점을 두고, 언어형식의 최대 단위가 문장이 아니라, 문장을 넘어선 단위인 담화라는 점을 바탕으로 한다. 특히 대화참여자들이 사회구성원으로서 서로 공유하고 있는 방법과 절차는 내재적으로 주어진 것이 아니고, 상황에 따라 선택되는 행동 방식이라는 점에 주목하고, 이러한 상호이해와 상호작용이 가능하도록 하는 방법과 절차가 무엇인가를 구어 담화를 통해 밝히고자 했다. 이러한 연구는 학제적 성격이 매우 강해서 화행이론과 같은 언어철학의 방법론뿐 아니라 상호작용의 측면을 미시사회학적으로 연구하는 대화분석이나 정보의 흐름을 정량적으로 연구하는 담화분석과 같이 다양한 방법론들이 시도되었다. 구어 담화에 관한 연구는 문법화론이나 말뭉치 언어학과 같이 언어학 자체의 연구를 더 풍성하게 하고, 영역을 확대시키는 역할을 해왔고, 실용적으로는 화법이나 의사소통 교육에 활용되었을 뿐 아니라, 자연언어 처리와 인공지능 분야에서 고객 서비스 프로그램을 구조화하는 연구의 바탕이 되어 왔다.

Abstract

This paper intends to be a brief yet comprehensive exposition on the trend of spoken corpus research from a functionalist perspective, and further on the ways such studies are utilized through corpus construction and natural language processing. Studies on spoken corpora began with the understanding that language is a functional means of communication rather than a mere combination of sound and meaning and with the tenet that linguistic investigations should extend beyond the level of sentences, i.e. discourse. Such a position assumes that the processes adopted by the participants in a discursive interaction are not a priori but subject to the discourse participants' selective decisions in contingent circumstances. These processes that enable the mutual understanding and interaction are brought to the front stage of linguistic research in spoken corpora. A natural consequence of this shift of research focus is that such investigations are attempted through a coordinated effort across disciplines such as language philosophy represented by the speech act theory, micro-sociology represented by discourse analysis focusing on the interactive aspect of discourse, and other disciplines of more quantitative orientation. Studies in spoken corpora have enriched the grammaticalization research and corpus linguistics and extended the horizon of linguistic research. Furthermore they have enabled applications of the research findings to speech and communication education, and served as the practical basis of constructing customer service programs through natural language processing and artificial intelligence.
