Abstract

This study investigates how tone (F₀ onset) and aspiration (VOT) interact in the perception of Standard Chinese stop consonants, focusing on cross-linguistic differences between native speakers of tonal (Mandarin) and non-tonal (Korean) languages. A total of 28 participants (14 native Mandarin speakers and 14 native Korean speakers) were tested using synthesized [tau], [ti], and [tu] syllables across 15 VOT steps under four tonal conditions (Tone 1 to Tone 4). Results showed that Mandarin listeners’ perception of aspiration was significantly modulated by tonal F₀, while Korean listeners also demonstrated sensitivity to tonal cues despite their non-tonal language background. The interaction effect varied depending on the following vowel, showing the order of [au] > [i] > [u]. These findings support the auditory enhancement hypothesis, which suggests that listeners attend to the most informative acoustic cues under perceptual demands. The study offers practical implications for second language phonetic training, especially for integrating segmental and suprasegmental cues in early stages of instruction.
