Abstract

In Marco Polo's The Descrption of the World, oral elements can be found throughout the work. The repeated appearance of 'you' is a representative example. In an oral context, this term refers to the audience, and in oral literature, it refers to the reader. This term reminds us of a kind of performance term used by traditional Chinese storytellers, and it remains in literary works based on storytelling performances as if it were a trace of a performance. In the Korean translation of The Descrption of the World, 'you' appears at least once and at most more than 20 times in almost every chapter. In addition, The Descrption of the World frequently shows elements that can be judged as oral characteristics. This includes the sudden appearance of the first-person 'I', and the way of addressing the audience with phrases such as "Let's talk about ~." These features are similar to oral elements such as '看官', '你看', '休說', and '且看下回分解' in oral performances or vernacular novels of ancient China. This paper first analyzes the oral elements that appear in various ways in The Description of the World in detail, and then introduces the oral features of the storytelling tradition of the Song and Yuan periods that are similar to them. It then raises the possibility of a relationship between Marco Polo's travels and the oral features. Marco Polo was particularly interested in Hangzhou among the various regions of China, and he himself stated that he ruled over Yangzhou for three years. Both cities were places where oral storytelling performances were particularly popular during the Song and Yuan periods. This paper argues that Marco Polo would have been exposed to local storytelling during his stay in these two cities and would have quickly become accustomed to storytelling as he had an excellent ability to learn new things, and it is also argued that his travels in these two cities may have influenced the oral characteristics of The Descrption of the World.
