Abstract

This paper examines word order variability and presence and absence of the accusative case marker -o in naturally occurred conversational Japanese. Its goal is to investigate how various word orders and case marking system interact with each other. The paper argues that word order, particularly the final position of the verb in a sentence and the position of the argument with respect to the verb, is a coding means in Japanese. Case marking particles are used most often when the roles of arguments are not coded through word order.  The current paper demonstrates that the position immediately before a transitive verb codes the argument as having the P role.  When the argument is placed in the coding position, its argument role is coded through word order alone, and no case-marking particles are needed. However, when the argument is placed in other than the coding position, then its argument role has to be coded through the use of the accusative case-marking particle –o.
