Abstract
This research examines to what extent local primary and secondary stakeholders affect multinational enterprise (MNE) subsidiaries' philanthropic corporate social responsibilities (CSR) activities in a host country. Drawing on the stakeholder perspective on the firm, we developed a conceptual model which was empirically tested, using partial least squares analysis. The sample consists of US and Japanese MNE subsidiaries operating in China. Our findings demonstrate that primary stakeholders have a greater impact on CSR activities than secondary stakeholders do in general. However, we find that both 'internal managers and employees' (primary stakeholder) and 'local community' (secondary stakeholder) function as a vehicle to promote Japanese MNE subsidiaries’ CSR activities in China. Based on these results, the study offer useful policy implications for Chinese government.
