This paper explore the causality between Asian economic crisis and the changes of ASEAN's economic diplomacy in the post-Asian economic crisis era. The paper argues that Asian economic crisis provided a momentum to ASEAN countries to change their economic diplomacy in the post-economic crisis era. As a result of the changes of ASEAN's economic diplomacy, the relationship between ASEAN and China is being closed ever before, while the role of USA and Japan in ASEAN has been relatively decreased. To take effect of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area on the first day of 2010 is an obvious example. The changes resulted from the fact that during the economic crisis of 1997/98, ASEAN's traditional economic patrons such as USA and Japan didn't provide enough support to bail-out the ailing ASEAN economies. On the contrary, Chinese government took a firm step to provide help to ASEAN economies through financial aid and long-term loans without any conditionalities. These Chinese immediate cooperations resulted in the gradual changes of ASEAN leaders's anti-Chinese perception.
