초록
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the recent international trade in services of ASEAN countries. For the analysis, international competitiveness in the global service market and the degree of intra-industry trade in services are investigated. Six countries are selected from the ten member countries of ASEAN according to the data availability for the analysis. Those are Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam, and the Philippines. For the evaluation of the international competitiveness of each country in the global service market, two indexes are estimated. The first one is Trade Specialization Index (TSI) and the other one is Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (RCAI). Some findings regarding the international competitiveness are as follows: All the ASEAN countries in concern are strong at Travelling industry except Singapore. However, all the countries without exception are weak at the industries of Intellectual Property Right, Insurance, and Finance. Among countries, Singapore has stronger international competitiveness in most service industries comparing to the other countries do. Somewhat interesting finding is that the Philippines shows relatively strong international competitiveness in the service trade that can be partly explained by rapidly growing Business Process Out-Sourcing industry in the country. Estimating the intra-industry trade (IIT) index, it is found that the degree of intra-industry trade in services of the six ASEAN countries are not so high as those of developed OECD countries. And also the estimates of marginal intra-industry trade (MIIT) of the ASEAN countries show higher in the countries with higher estimates of intra-industry trade. It implies that intra- industry trade in services has increased smoothly with lower adjustment costs in the ASEAN countries than in developed OECD countries.
