베트남 덴 훙 축제(lễ hội Đền Hùng)의 변천사 및 의례적 기능 일고찰: 반 제넵과 빅터 터너의 이론을 중심으로
A Study on the History and Ritual Functions of Den Hung Festival in Vietnam: Focused on the Rite Passage

Annually, about 7,966 different festivals are held in Vietnam, most of which are civilian festivals that celebrate abundance, gratitude, and peace granted by their ancestors. One of the most representative festivals in Vietnam is the Den Hung Festival, which commemorates the hero-king Hung starring the origin myth of Vietnam. In this research, under the premise that the significance and the function of a festival are reformed by the fluctuating Vietnamese political scenes and the following changes of the festival policies since 1945, the history of Den Hung festival was studied, furthermore, the festival programs of the recent eight years were reviewed. Moreover, the rites of the Den Hung festival were analyzed - based on the Arnold Van-Gennep's 'The rites of passage' and Victor W. Turner's 'Liminality' and 'Communitas'- in order to confirm whether the festival has extended socio-cultural functions or is just limited to personal discovery of the oneself’s origin. This study validates that Den Hung festival has become an imperative festival maintaining Vietnamese culture despite the drastic changes of the socio-political scenes in Vietnam, thereby, it features a key role in rightfully forming and succeeding the ethnic identity.
