초록
Minangkabau people of Indonesia are renowned as the world's largest remaining matrilineal society. The tradition, known as adat in Indonesian, combines both Islamic and matrilineal systems within the context of Minangkabau. Existing studies have primarily focused on the historical aspects and social structures of Minangkabau adat, lacking empirical analysis of present-day phenomena. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining the contemporary civil society in Minangkabau and its relationship with adat. Given the inherent matrilineal nature of this ethnic group, women's issues are given particular prominence in this research. Our fieldwork observations reveal that women's issues paradoxically reflect the influence of adat, and their resolution often becomes a subject of dispute in relation to adat. The observed diversity within Minangkabau civil societies is contingent upon the extent to which adat has permeated. It becomes evident that the Minangkabau society cannot be exclusively characterized as a unified entity bound solely by adat.
