본고는 ‘사회적 실천으로서의 양식(style as social practice)’ 개념의 가능성을 모색하고자 한다. 사회적 실천으로서의 양식 개념의 가능성은 신중하게 양식론의 지형을 전체적으로 조망하는 과정에서 내용과 방향을 획득해 나갈 수 있을 듯 보인다. 여기서 관건은 양식행위자들을 이미지 생산과 소비를 통한 사회적 행위자로 보고 그들의 ‘실천’과 그것의 사회적 ‘맥락’을 양식개념 내에서 여하히 설명해 내느냐의 문제와 관련되는 것으로 본다. 여기서 부르디외(Pierre Bourdieu)의 ‘아비투스(habitus)’와 ‘장(field)’ 개념은 중요한 설명적 함의를 갖는다. 왜냐하면 행위자들의 실천의 적극성을 부정하지 않으면서도, 특정한 방식의 실천을 그것이 객관적 구조와 만나는 지점에서 파악하도록 유도하기 때문이다. 그런 의미에서 아비투스와 장 개념을 양식론의 지평에서 재해석할 때 다소간 침체된 양식론의 논의 지평에서 좀 더 생산적인 가능성을 제시할 수 있을지도 모른다.
Abstract
In this paper, I will explore the possibility of the concept, “style as social practice”. The possibility of this concept will be realized only through investigating the whole map of various theories of style. The key is how it could be possible to regard the artists as social actors who struggle to obtain more symbolic capital in the social space, and explain the interrelation between their ‘practice’ and ‘social context’ in the concept of style. In doing so, the Bourdieu’s theory of ‘habitus and field’ will help because his concepts never deny the activeness of social actors, but lead us to understand the style practice as social action in relation to the objective condition. I think it is very meaningful in many ways to apply Bourdieu’s theory to the problem of style.
