Abstract
Victor Turner’s theory of ‘social drama’, with its stages of breach, crisis, redress, and reintegration/schism, is useful to study a sequence of conflictive events in our society. Turner explains that concurrent to the social drama, a metasocial commentary as ‘collective reflexivity’ runs in the form of cultural performance, especially in the third stage of ‘redress’ in his model. This paper reinterprets Turner’s ‘social drama’ in the contemporary socio-cultural contexts and applies it to the ‘Shin Junga & Byun Yangkeyun Scandal’ that captivated the Korean media and public for three months in 2007. It analyzes mass media and internet media as the contemporary form of cultural performances and elucidate how the ‘Shin-Byun Scandal’ interplays between ‘indicative’ social drama and ‘subjunctive’ cultural performances.
