Abstract
In this paper, we examine and compare the line in the Book of Revelation 14,4 which reads, ‘They did not defile themselves with women’, and the issue of Korean ‘Comfort women’. For this purpose, this study applies ‘postcolonial criticism’ with ‘intertextuality.’ The results of the study are as follows. Rev. 14,4 has a double meaning, one that is literal and one metaphorical. However, the fact that John’s language creates a negative image of women in the verse cannot be overlooked. In the verse, we see the concern for the national and religious dimensions of hybridity, but the first and foremost is the religious aspect. In terms of the role of women, this verse implies a negative view of women’s sexuality. Here, we can read that in the great Tribulation, virginity is requisite for this special group, and the male virgin is the only one who can join the people of God. The Korean ‘Comfort women’ issue is the result of the violence of a male-dominated patriarchal society. There are similarities and differences as well between Rev. 14,4 and the ‘Comport women’ issue. First, the purity obligation is placed upon men in Revelation, but upon women in the case of ‘Comport women’. However, there are hierarchial, patriarchical, and androcentric concerns in both cases. Secondly, the hybridity in both cases is rejected. In Revelation, the hybridity is religious, whereas, in the issue of ‘Comfort women’, it is national. Third, in both cases we see a dichotomy system which divides ‘purity (we)’ and ‘contamination (other).’
